Vegetation in cities reduced heat and manages stormwater. Although the measures are largely the same, implementation can be done at different scales (small – private property, larger – collective areas). This measure talks about greening your own garden. Convert gravel and grassy spaces into greener gardens around houses, shops or businesses. This can be done with low vegetation, taller native plants, trees or shrubs.
Feasibility & Local Applicability
- Consider the distance to the house when planting large trees with roots as these can impact the structural integrity of the buildings and cisterns. Some species grow deeper or more invasive root systems than others. When planting leafy plants, consider fencing to reduce grazing from iguanas, goats or other herbivores. Consider this measure in combination with rooftop water harvesting for re-use.
- If responsibility resides with landowner, knowledge financial means, time must be present to implement the greening.
Co-benefits
Encouraging green gardens can help local biodiversity to thrive. This can also reduce the temperature around the houses, providing shade and helping to reduce erosion and flooding, by letting water infiltrate into the soil
