Technology transfers involve sharing climate-related tools, systems, and knowledge between countries or regions. Climate technologies for both adaptation and mitigation often play an essential role in reaching a nation's climate objectives. The IPCCC specifically urges developed countries to facilitate and finance the transfer of/or access to climate technologies to other Parties of the convention. The Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) is one platform facilitating these transfers and exchanges.
CTCN connects countries with technical experts and helps tailor solutions to local needs. The UNFCCC also encourages developed countries to support developing nations by financing and sharing climate technologies.
Feasibility & Local Applicability
Technology transfers are feasible in the Caribbean but depend on local capacity and funding. Small islands may face challenges accessing expensive or proprietary technologies. To be effective, technologies must be adapted to local conditions, in terms of climate, culture, or infrastructure. Technologies may not always be socially or culturally accepted.
Co-benefits
Technology exchanges can bring many benefits beyond climate adaptation. They can create new jobs, support local industries, and build technical skills. For example, introducing aquaponics or solar-powered irrigation systems can support food security while reducing environmental impact. Innovation exchange can also strengthen regional cooperation and knowledge sharing.
Equity & Vulnerability Considerations
Technologies should be adapted to local conditions and vulnerabilities. Technologies should not have negative side effects on vulnerable communities. Training programs and participatory planning can help ensure that technologies are used effectively and benefit everyone.
Costs
Medium | Costs depend on the scope of the transfer program and the kind of technologies.
